South Sound Bowling www.southsoundusbc.com Washington State USBC www.wsusbc.net Bowling Headquarters www.bowl.com be held July 16, 22 and 28th at the association office at 4517 South M. The times will be 10 a.m. and 7 p.m. all three days. There are a few rule changes and additional changes in the awards program among other items on the agenda. This is open to all league officers and bowlers interested in keeping up with the changes in our sport Please contact the office to reserve your spot and we hope to see you there! Also note that we are working hard to put together your average book. Award changes: As I noted above there will be some changes in the awards program. USBC is putting out awards this season that they hope will help market and promote our sport. Their plan is that these awards will be displayed in a fashion that the sport of bowling can get some additional exposure. I am sure some may not approve of what will be offered but this is not business as usual. In this environment bowling needs to be marketed and promoted every way possible. If this particular program does not work, they will try something different. This USBC is not the same old bowling association. They have staffed the association with younger, more forward thinking individuals. They have been and will continue to use the technology available to get the word out about bowling. The USBC is working very hard to grow our sport. Change is here to stay. Member benefits: I continue to hear complaints that USBC is cutting back on spending and its member benefits. Let me tell you firsthand that no other sports organization does as much for their members as USBC does. The price we pay for membership is a steal. Example, for $25-35 you can get a golf card and for that you get a handicap, and that’s it! Do you know what you get if you are one inch away from a hole in one, absolutely nothing. In bowling, for getting a 299, 298, 297, bowling recognizes your accomplishment. We, as bowlers, have been spoiled by the many award options available to us. We expect something for everything we do. Appreciate and support what we have, we have got it good. Hall of Fame: At the recent Pierce County Sports Hall of Fame banquet Bob Bjorke and Mike Ingraham were inducted into the Pierce County Sports Hall of Fame. Bob for his accomplishments on the lanes and Mike for his contribution as a sports writer for the Tacoma News Tribune. Mike was the bowling writer for the paper when we actually got coverage from the paper. He knows and loved the sport and provided the type of coverage we will unfortunately not see again. Congratulations to both PBA coming: The PBA will be in town in July and August. There will be regional tournaments at Secoma and Daffodil and pro-ams at both centers. Call them for additional information and squad openings. Walter Ray will be at Secoma for the July tournament. Now that summer is officially here, have a great one and let’s hope the weather cooperates as well! We look forward to seeing you in the fall. JULY2009 2 JULY2009 2 Kegler’S Korner President’s Korner Leigh Goodier This would be the issue for the last President’s report for Karen Jost. For those who don’t know Karen was offered and accepted a new job and left earlier this month for Alexandria, VA. She had been very busy getting together with friends packing up her home and arranging everything to ship right up till leaving. She has dedicated a lot of time to bowling and volunteering at the National, State and local levels. Her bowling family here in South Sound will miss her. Bowling is a big part of her life and I know she will be looking for the centers in her new home town to start the upcoming season. Please join me in saying thank you & wishing her all the best on her new ventures. I look forward to my term as the next President for South Sound. This association is run by all of the many volunteers who help on the board, committees and at events. Everyone has a voice and is a part of growing the sport and our association. We have a busy season coming up. South Sound bowling tournaments, center events, Husky football game fundraisers, youth events and we will be hosting the Washington State Open Tournament from April thru May. There are plenty of opportunities out there to participate or become involved as a volunteer. If you have ideas, questions, concerns or suggestions please let us know. Enjoy the rest of your summer! All Star Matches Mike Estes Well the South Sound/ Seattle matches didn’t fare well this year. The only shining stars were our Women’s teams. The Women and Senior Women won! SEATTLE SOUTH SOUND Men 62.5 37.5 Senior Men 58.5 41.5 Women 7,541 8,251 Senior Women 6,779 6,809 Boys 8,299 7,831 Girls 7,257 7,107 Next year we all will do better, but all had a great time! I was hoping to have the rules done for next season, but we got behind. I will get them approved by the board at our July meeting and posted on our website. A couple of the proposed changes are adding more places to the house averages and some of the tournaments. Also changes to the points awarded. Limiting the number of house/special leagues to two, with the most points per person. Anyone out there with All Star Pictures? Were you one of the shutter bugs taking pictures at the South Sound All Star home matches or the extravaganza? If you were and have any pictures you could share with the Association we’d love to see them. It seems that our camera was a bit out of focus and the ones we took didn’t turn out. If you can, drop them by the office or email to ssusbc@ qwestoffice.net. Thank you! Masters Tournament Mike Estes I know its just summer and the events aren’t till fall BUT the Masters are getting closer! Our next newsletter won’t be out till September. That being said the Senior Masters is October 17th & 18th. We have three divisions: the Open (everyone over 50); the 62 and over; and our 199 and under. Points for the All Stars are awarded based on qualifying scores, so everyone over 55 is eligible. Then the premier event of the year, our Masters tournament is on November 7th & 8th. All Star points are awarded based on finishing place in the finals. Have a great summer and support your local bowling centers (and golf courses). Call for help: Annual lane Inspections Have you ever been up close and personal with a pinsetter or a pin deck? Do you know how small 40,000 of an inch is? You can find this out and much more by getting involved with your association’s annual lane inspections. We have to measure every lane of every bowling center in town, check to make sure every pin is on spot and make sure every foul light works. If you are interested in donating an hour or two of time to help us, give Jerry Ledbetter call at 253-473-4822. The pay sucks but I’ll buy you breakfast. Washington State Jamboree Jerry Ledbetter The annual Washington State Jamboree will be held September 26th & 27th in Lynnwood. Cost for the weekend is $20. This event is open to ALL South Sound members. There will be informational workshops and seminars during the two days. Usually there is a representative from USBC to discuss bowling issues and answer questions. This is a great opportunity to get some information about our sport and meet bowlers from across the state. I will need names by August 31st. Come learn from the pros. Once again the WSUSBC will be offering the Bowl Like the Pros instructional program. Cost is $45 for on the lanes, hands-on instruction from some of the best bowlers in the world. At this time Walter Ray Williams, Tony Reyes, and Shannon O’Keefe will be here. They are also working on getting Jason Belmonte. The sessions will be September 26th at Kenmore Lanes. The adult squad will be at 11:30 a.m. and the youth squad at 2:30 p.m. These spots will fill up fast so the sooner you get your entry in the better. Contact the South Sound office at 253-473-4822. Everyone I talked to who went to last year’s Bowl Like the Pros thoroughly enjoyed the event. Hope to see you at one or both of these great events. Kegler’S Korner JULY2009 3 Volunteer opportunity Husky games! How would you like to help volunteer some time on a Saturday this fall AND be able to see a UW Husky home football game at the same time? South Sound helps usher at the home football games as a fundraiser for our bowling association. The money we receive helps fund various services for our youth and adult bowlers. During last season’s games the volunteers helped to raise $4,171.38 over those six games. Way to go volunteers! For each game we need 10 volunteers. We car pool and it is a great opportunity to help raise money while enjoying a football game. It does involve standing for several hours. You do not have to be a bowler to help. Family and friends are more than welcome and appreciated. However, volunteers need to be 18 or older. 20th Annual ladies Classic Tournament The game times vary with each date. We are paid from the time we check in, usually 2 ½ to 3 hours before game time till after the fans are out. The schedule and times are below. So, please take a look at your calendar now and call the SSUSBC office 253-473-4822 or Leigh. Give us your contact information or we can sign you up for a game. The more volunteers we have assist us the easier it becomes so that same people won’t need to go to every game.
